Best Places for Hiking Outside of Midlothian

The fall is a beautiful time. The crisp air and colorful leaves are quite possibly why so many claim fall as their favorite season! With that being said, there’s no better time to spend time in nature than the autumn season. While there are plenty of places to enjoy the outdoors near Midlothian, sometimes you want to hit the trails and go on a hike in the mountains. Humpback Rocks (1.5 Hours Away)

Humpback Rocks is about an hour and a half from Midlothian near Nellysford, Virginia. This loop is about 3.8 miles long and is considered moderate. Along the trail, take in beautiful foliage, and of course, enjoy a breathtaking overlook of the valley. This hike is well worth both the drive and the climb.

Crabtree Falls (2 Hours Away)

Located about 2 hours from Midlothian on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Crabtree Falls is a beautiful hike. As its name suggests, this hike features five major cascades and the highest vertical drop waterfall east of the Mississippi River! The trek itself is about 2.8 miles out and back. Keep in mind, the trail can get slippery, so be sure to wear proper shoes. There is a $3 parking fee as well. Enjoy stunning views of waterfalls with the backdrop of red, orange, and yellow leaves.

Riprap Trail (About 2 Hours Away)

For a longer hike, head to Riprap Trail! Located about 2 hours from Midlothian, this trail spans 9.5 miles. Hikers should plan for this hike to take 5 hours to complete and allow 30 minutes for lunch. Pack up a picnic and hit the road to enjoy a hike that features a 20-foot waterfall, many streams, and more!

Old Rag (2 Hours Away)

Old Rag is the most popular destination in Shenandoah National Park, according to the U.S. National Park Service. Additionally, Outside Online ranked this hike one of the top 25 in the world. However, before rushing to complete this bucket list hike, it’s important to know your limits. This 9.8-mile hike is strenuous, and hikers should prepare. With a rock scramble that requires upper body strength and significant elevation changes, this hike is not for everyone! However, while this hike is considered strenuous, the expansive views make the hard work worth it. Do some research before planning this hike to ensure you’re prepared and safe!

White Oak Canyon (2.5 Hours Away)

Make a day trip to White Oak Canyon to enjoy breathtaking views of six different waterfalls, ranging in height from 35 to 86 feet. According to Hiking Upward, this hike can be completed in under 4 hours and is not considered difficult. If you’d like a bit more of a challenge, hike the 4.6 miles to the Upper Falls! Keep in mind, this section is rather steep. Pack a picnic for this trip and enjoy your meal overlooking one of the beautiful waterfalls!
